Kulsoom Orchard & Heirloom Pepper Project

We aim to make heirloom chili peppers and culturally unique heritage fruit accessible to a wider audience through events, dinners, and workshops that celebrate the spicy diaspora.

Our Story

Kulsoom is the name of Pervaiz’s paternal grandmother, and it means “rosy cheeked beauty” in Urdu and Arabic—a perfect description of our orchard and garden located in Hudson, New York. We grow rosy cheeked heirloom fruit and host events, dinners, and workshops that promote conversation around food, culture, and the land.

This summer marks the inaugural season of our heirloom chili pepper dinners. Chefs from across the diverse chili pepper diaspora will cook dinners served safely and exquisitely in our beautiful orchard and garden.

Kulsoom was founded in 2021 by Pervaiz and Laena, as a way to share the stewardship of their land with a larger community via food, which is their love language.

They transformed an aging tennis court into a lush garden, where they grow their organic heirloom peppers and melons from seed, using a combination of sustainable agricultural practices that Laena has learned during her childhood in the Hudson Valley and honed on rooftop farms in New York City. Our garden is nourished with a solar water pump and utilizes native farming practices like the three sisters that have been practiced on our land for thousands of years.

Pervaiz is thrilled to partner and collaborate with chefs he has been lucky to know throughout his career in cooking and food journalism.
